Managing indirect taxes in India can be challenging due to evolving rates, circular clarifications, and filing timelines. However, establishing a robust GST compliance framework is essential to protect your business from penalties and maintain high supplier trust ratings.
1. Understand the GST Return Deadlines
For standard registered taxpayers, GSTR compliance generally centers around two core monthly forms:
- GSTR-1: This is the statement of outward (sales) supplies. Regular taxpayers must submit GSTR-1 by the 11th of the succeeding month. Under the QRMP (Quarterly Return Monthly Payment) scheme, GSTR-1 is submitted by the 13th of the quarter-end.
- GSTR-3B: This is a summary return containing details of sales tax liability, eligible Input Tax Credit (ITC), and net tax payable. It must be filed by the 20th of the following month.
2. Reconcile GSTR-2B Against Purchase Registers
A common error is claiming Input Tax Credit (ITC) purely based on purchase invoices in your possession. Under current Indian tax rules, you can only claim ITC if your supplier registers their sales invoice in their GSTR-1, which propagates to your GSTR-2B ledger. We recommend conducting monthly reconciliations to identify defaulting vendors and claim eligible credits safely.
3. Stay Ahead of late Fees and Penalties
Delaying returns triggers immediate daily late fees (₹50 per day for transactions, and ₹20 per day for Nil returns) up to ₹5,000 per return. Furthermore, continuous defaults for over two periods can result in the suspension of your GSTIN, locking out your business transactions.
